Cats On Trees - Alie
Allied Forces
What a beautiful summer pop album! Although it’s been released for a few months, I feel it more appropriate to broach it under the sun.
Should Cats On Trees still be introduced? Let’s say they should. This duo, made up of pianist-singer Nina and drummer Yohan since 2007, mainly made a name for themselves in 2014. What’s less known is, they come from Toulouse, which gives me the opportunity to send you to my Bordeaux-Toulouse playlist (audio or video).
After their 2 first albums, I had soon pigeonholed them amongst artists able to make a hit or two, the rest being of little interest in my eyes. Mistake.
For rhis new album, pandemic dictates, they had to break with their habits and work individually. As a result, they went the extra mile. Without taking into account the pleasure to meet again afterwards.
Which gives us: devilishly catchy choruses, with a single title ("Alie"), a double title ("Took Took") or a triple title ("Please Please Please"), a break which looks like Petit Biscuit ("Nino"), a melodic tissue as sunny as Pony Pony Run Run ("She Was a Girl"), a pretty a capella finale ("Lost Found Love"), a false end ("Dad on the Moon").
No fundamental difference between the 3 tracks in French and the 10 tracks in English. They’re the same style, it remains Cats On Trees. And you think, considering this set, the used language finally doesn’t really matter.
So what does it just speak of? Of love kind of everywhere, in every shape and form, including filial ("Dad on the Moon"), of friendship too ("Old Friends").
"Une Nuit ou Deux" more or less resumes the topic dealt by Alex Beaupain in "Avant la Haine". In a nutshell, let’s spend a good moment of love together, and let’s split before it worsens. Except Beaupain get the opposite opinion be heard (through Camélia Jordana’s voice, as a duo).
"She Was a Girl" advocates tolerance regarding genders (boy, girl, what does it matter?) one more time, if needed. Evidently yes, it’s unfortunately still needed in 2022. In every season. Including summer.

Coming to the ¾ of the album you can imagine you’ve probably seen the crux of the matter and you’d classically be treated to duller tracks to complete. Not at all! "Tendresse", which brings up the transmission that loving parents can do their child, looks like hit as well!
Talking about hits, I’d better done without a rehash of "Sirens Call" which smells of a business argument. Even though I’d loved this piece, it belongs to the past and doesn’t here help out this very good new album which has the merit of being fully unreleased. -
