Livingstone - Turn Bizarre
Like a living stone
I didn’t know what 'stoner rock' meant. Here we go. Simple repetitive rhythms ("Big Jim"), heavy bass ("Mary Lee"), melodic singing ("Feel I Can Only Go Higher"), vintage production.
A riff can be enough. For example the one from self-titled "Turn Bizarre".
This is rock n roll. Basic rock n roll. It feels good sometimes. It hammers the result home.
An eye on the sleeve, an ear in the music, and you’ve understood you are facing a power trio bass-guitar-drums. In this order Théophile, Thomas and Romain. The guitar solos come just at the right moment ("Nowhere Feels Like Home (So Get on the Road)"). The wah-wah’s are taken out sometimes ("Love is a Race"). No real resting time, except a little with "Secret Nights".
The high point is "Just Need to Piss". Rarely an urge to go pee has had such a good result!
Named Livingstone after a former Thai restaurant in Paris, but occasionally a reference to Dr Livingstone too, these young Parisians, total 91 years the 3 of them, are releasing their 3rd album already, with as many tours in the United States, where they built a reputation with a Black Sabbath cover!
This legitimacy enables them today for instance to invite Didier Wampas to blare in "Fast Burn".
Thomas’ ardour and way of singing in English make me think of Pony Pony Run Run and Nameless, in another style. Still the accent has to be improved a little more but it’s on a good way.
And at least now I know what 'stoner rock' means. It means Livingstone.

An album is 10 songs. Basic, I said. Nothing long (between 2:20 and 3:40 each). Just what’s required to put 2 verses, 2 choruses and a solo, in broad strokes.
So the total of 32:27 is too brief. You have to rummage through the Web to get a little more. Like this live session of "Secret Nights", in which Gunnar Ellwanger from Gunwood comes and involves his voice and his bouzouki. The surprise isn’t so amazing actually, in good rock n roll company. -
