Magali Michaut - Prendre de la Hauteur
From a great height
She is moving forward, Magali. Inexorably. Remember, we left her in 2021 when Impressionniste, her 1st album, was released, which had the merit of laying the first stone.
Since then, she has come a long way. Her way. She surrounded herself with pros of the music world (musicians, artistic director, mixer, press officers), travelled to many small places from here to the moon to give concerts (and God knows it's hard to find), promoted herself on social media with mischief... while continuing her research activities. Where does she get all this energy?
Perhaps she draws it from the softness, which she claims as a standard, taking the guitar in her arms ("Matin Douceur").
Perhaps also in a double life, for several years, one inspiring the other, in the mode of communicating vessels. For she now dares to fill her songs with scientific allusions and references and demonstrations, even to make them her entire subject ("Ultracrépidarianisme", preceded by an explanatory introduction by Étienne Klein!, "Ainsi Font les Idées", "Référentiel Newtonien", "Où Va-t-On?" …)
There is such a thing as Christian rock, so why not scientific chanson?
The No. 1 source of inspiration is therefore science. As No.2 source of inspiration, memories. Childhood memories, teenage memories ("Reste Avec Moi", "Cergy").
And then there's what I would call the Magali Michaut effect. A good example is "La Bulle". Probably not her best, and I could point out several small flaws in my opinion (in the melody, in the choice of words, in the interpretation)... But! Because there is a but. But the bubble (or 'cave', for others) is a bitter theme rarely dealt with, I think, and if you dwell on it you identify very well. Eventually validating the small flaws in question. That's the Magali Michaut effect.
As for "Ce Réveillon-là", I like the moral of the story.
This cheerful tune is a perfect transition here to talk about music, often folk or even country or even bluegrass. While remaining French chanson.
Let us highlight here the beautiful work done by and with Kilian Arzel (one of Gildas Arzel's offspring). I've had the opportunity to hear a good number of these songs in dry version in concert (I mean: guitar-voice, in their simplest form), I can tell you that thanks to his professional arrangements they have taken on another dimension!
During my studies, a teacher had revealed to us that the aim of the courses were not so much to learn theorems, historical facts, the mechanism of a language, works of art... than to "learn how to learn"! Useful for all life, everywhere. Exactly what Magali has implemented for her singer career. And that's why she's going to succeed, one way or another. As Alain Souchon sang: we move forward, we move forward... As Magali sings ("Référentiel Newtonien"): “The more I move forward, the further it becomes”...

One of the particularities – and good ideas – of this record is to have included small transition tracks, sometimes sketches. "La Pomme et le Repos", with Emma la Clown in the role of the one who doesn't get anything, is quite funny, although a little too long.
