Nick Porsche - Big Fish
Another kettle of fish
Immediately from the opening of the album with the somewhat clownish "Come a Little Closer", I smelt a perfume of Tim Burton... without even knowing that this one did a movie named Big Fish too! It just goes to show!
When it comes to connection, musical connection this time, the one with Puts Marie looks natural and obvious, especially in the a bit lunar pieces ("It's Better to Love Her", "Big Fish", "Too Much for Me"). You can’t be the drummer of such a band for 20 years without keeping an influence of it! ...But maybe Nick Porsche had an influence over Puts Marie too? It works both ways.
For all that, when he grabs the mike, the musician doesn’t make some second Puts Marie, but he’s got the intelligence to propose something else. Well played.
The cool side, light reggae, fluid voice, reminds me exactly of what I said about the latest Jil Is Lucky a little time ago.
In the giddier pieces ("Sorrow"), I oddly think of Sade too!
Obviously, you’ve got here a drummer album, riddled with bells and percussion instruments, and even a little samba ("Solo"). Although the German from Biel has passed the sticks onto Hannes Prisi, to focus on songwriting and singing – rather a good surprise by the way – as well as rhythm guitars and keys, you can bet he’s cared particularly of the partitions of his long-time played instrument.
The choice of "Justify" as a single isn’t really justified because in my opinion there are more striking tracks ("All I Need" for example) than this a bit ordinary song. Or maybe the aim is to make it loved by ordinary people?
The words talk of love and sorrow, of need and desire. "I Can't Get Enough" takes another look at the Stoneish theme of dissatisfaction (“And I've tried and I've tried”).
Unfortunately this Big fish ends with a not very original cover of "Sunny", which you could do without. But you can’t go and see a Tim Burton every day, can you?

Let’s be given a bit length, since there are almost always 4 minutes per song, more or less.
"It's Better to Love Her" is the trippiest song and she makes 5, it took that for this monument (with its Deep Purple side).
The lyrics are sometimes too short to allow this extent, just like "All I Need", forced to duplicate its unique verse, pity.
"Big Fish" (4:25) fits a beautiful atmosphere, how I’d like to hear a long version of it!
According to me, the anomaly is to have set "Too Much for Me" in 2nd position, whereas it rather looks like an ending song. Don’t let yourself be disconcerted, keep it up, you won’t regret it. -
