Champs - Vamala
Vow mow low
It’s starting with explosions. Raw with no intro. But don’t worry; only the words say it.
No din here. This rising-English-duo delivers a beautiful aerial CD, sometimes pared-down folk with simonandgarfunkelish arpeggios ("Forever Be Upstanding at the Door"), sometimes pop with even a nod to Bronski Beat (in "Desire"), the whole thing with a surprising androgynous voice.
I don’t get tired of these melodies I tamed one after the other.
These 2 bruvs confess to an admiration for the Beach Boys’ or the Beatles’ harmonies, and that can be heard. A track like "Sophia" could seem written by John Lennon, whereas faster pieces like "3,000 Miles" or "Blood" remind us of the unrivalled ability of English to compose pop hits.
Finally, "The Devil's Carnival" concludes on a suspended somewhat mystic yet plain touch. The set is consistent and makes this Vamala one of the best albums of 2015, if not the best in my opinion, even though it’s starting with explosions.

No embellishment. In the pure songwriting tradition, the pieces are short: verse chorus vers chorus, that’s all. Calibrated between 3 and 4 minutes (except "Roll Me Out", even shorter). Which brings the total duration to 40 minutes for – all the same – twelve pieces.
